The Lowdown on the Unalome Symbol

Updated: May 29, 2020

You're about to be enlightened.

There are currently over 40,000* google searches for the word unalome every month and this number is going up fast. Like other popular symbols before it (the ampersand and infinity, for example), the unalome, also known as the yant symbol, looks set to be the next symbol craze to be tattooed, printed, and doodled on every surface possible. Just last month, the Brit celebrity tattoo enthusiast Cheryl was spotted with an unalome tattoo on her chest.

But what is an unalome?

Here are a few facts about this sacred symbol.

  • The unalome is a Buddhist symbol that represents the path to enlightenment.

  • The spiral represents the crown or head and is the 'start' of the unalome.

  • As you travel along life's path, the twists and turns or ups and downs in the pattern represent the struggles in life.

  • The straight line represents enlightenment and achieving nirvana.

  • It can be either male or female depending on which way the spiral opening faces.

  • The dots at the end of the design symbolise the end of the journey, this can be interpreted as physical death or death of spiritual unawareness.

And that's the basics covered. I recently wrote about what the Unalome symbol represents to me personally and how we can use it as a reminder that we are always stronger than we know.

It makes for a gorgeous and unusual tattoo; it's unique, it's got meaning, it's a stunning design that's simple but significant. The unalome symbol is completely on trend, but if you're not quite ready to get inked and can't wait for the inundation of unalome embellished everything then you can check out the gorgeous jewellery below.
